REVIEW: What is an Online Course?

This course is conducted entirely online. You do not have to be present on campus to complete any portion of it. You will participate in the course using Hunter College’s course management system, Blackboard as well as Zoom and other online interactive technologies.

While online classes at Hunter do not take place in real time, they are not correspondence or self-paced courses. You will find readings, activities and assignments in each weekly folder on Blackboard. You may choose at what time during the week to do the assignments but they have to be completed by their designated deadlines.

In general, we will meet asynchronously on Fridays. Then on Tuesdays we will meet synchronously, live, on Zoom during our scheduled class time (12:45-2pm) using the following Zoom Link. The exact dates for our class meetings are in the Course Schedule on our Syllabus.

For our asynchronous classes, I will post materials (e.g. readings, pre-recorded audio lectures and PowerPoint presentations, videos, quizzes etc.). Please review all the materials for the week before our synchronous class meetings so that you can actively discuss and participate in the peer/group activities. During our class meetings, we will discuss and review the topics and you will participate in peer/group activities. This means a new weekly module will be available after our Tuesday class (will open on Wednesday) and assignments will generally be due by the start of next synchronous class (Tuesday at 12:45pm).

Learning in an online environment is a substantially different experience from attending a traditional campus-based course. Interaction between students and the instructor, between students and course content, and among students have been built into the course. Students who succeed in an online course tend to be self-directed, follow directions, and manage their time well. They are expected to spend a minimum of six hours per week on coursework for a 3-credit class.
